Was this taken though a window or screen as it appears soft overall or the focus point is way in front of the squirell

I am happy with the two trees on the left and right of the frame and the log at the bottom of the frame. It looks like some branches were swaying in the wind. With better focus it could have become a nice image. Is it a big crop?

It was not a big crop. I was maybe 20 feet away and it was at most at 400mm. (don't have the original settings darn)

What camera are you using? Even that info is helpful. I would suggest that if you did not do this here, picking a single AF point and training that on the squirrel's eye could have helped obtain critical focus. If you are using all of the AF points, one is grabbing something closer to the camera and throwing off your focus.

I very rarely use anything but the center AF point. I used a Canon 10D with 100-400 mm lens. Still learning. Only been shooting for 2 years and using an SLR for a little over 1 year.

Fully agree that the squirrel is happy !!!

The slight softness could be camera shake? Not sure what the shutter speed was but imagine it was low !!! Do like the subject and behavior. Also that you left more room up front than to the rear. Excellent !!!
