Hi

I have recently moved to the States (NC) from Europe and need to get my camera gear insured, Can anybody recommend a good insurance company that deal with this type of insurance

Thanks for the tip guys. Right now I have my camera gear insured with a rider on my Allstate homeowners insurance. The rider cost me like $50/year.

Hi Ed,

The problem is not getting coverage.....
Good luck trying to collect from allstate if you damage a lens out in the field or in a foreign country. Last time I dealt with allstate I had to sue to get a check.

With Chubb its one call and they send a check.

You get what you pay for :-)

I got a great deal through state farm as a rider on my homeowners. Got replacement value coverage at a decent premium.

The problem with riders on homeowners insurance and this is particularly true in Florida is that if you have a big loss on the camera equipment, the insurance company now has a great reason to dump you. Getting homeowners insurance in FL is a big problem. I work in the building industry, attend all the Florida Building Commission meetings and have seen first hand homeowners and the state face with the issue of insurance in FL.

IMO and that of my State Farm agent, leave the riders off.

Chubb is the way to go - yes more expensive but worth it.

Mr O'toole can attest to this - when in Homer 3/06 and my 500mm lens smashed on the ground into three pieces, leaving the lens mount still on the camera, by that afternoon I was talking to an adjuster, emailing him images and having the lens & camera sent to Canon to provide them a "no chance on earth anyone was going to fix that lens" letter for my claim. I received a check for the full replacement cost two days after getting back from AK.

I couldn't find any place on the NAPP site where it mentioned Chubb.

Rand is the agent, Chubb is the underwriter.

Around $40 per Thousand. But don't trust that, contact them yourself.

If you take the insurance as a rider on your household policy then you are asking for trouble. Make one claim and you can lose your household insurance.

It is best to have a stand alone camera insurance policy. Chubb is an excellent carrier.

Allstate is notorious for being slow pay or no pay.

I have inquired of Kristin whether the insurance also covers computers which is something a lot of photographers might be carrying on travels. Will advise of response.

Has anyone found any better insurance or better priced insurance?
