We had a blast with the arctic terns. Manual exposure and flash once again provided the necessary consistency in overall exposure.

IDS Mark III, 24-70 @ 24mm, manual flash balanced at 4 ft.
Manual, NO METER sunny f/16 equivalent - .3 EV, 1/1000 @ f/11, ISO 400
Post-production-ARC 5.0, CS4

Terrific result Chas it looks almost unreal. Excelent exposure control and use of fill flash.

Wow, the bird looks like it's glowing ! It might look a bit sharper than what our naked eyes can see in the real world, but it's a good looking image IMO. If I could nit-pick, then perhaps the head could be a bit lower like the bird is looking down at your and so we can see the eyes better, or with the bird looking up a bit so that the pic could show the beak against the sky clearly.

Great feather detail. Really stands out against the under exposed blue sky. At this resolution the head area looks a little oversharpened with light and dark halos visible. At higher res the detail of the open beak would be clearer and add to the image.

Most effective use of flash. Without it, the eyes would have been lost in the black feathers of the head. Flash also alowed for under exposure of BG; resulting in great contrast between bird and sky. Great shot.

Hi Chas my laptop monitor is 1440x900 and am looking at the image without scaling. Repost resolves the halo I was seeing (had put my laptop to sleep with your image window open so was able to reload your page into a new window and compare both) Looks fine on my desktop at 1920x1200.

UNTIL WE ARE ALL VIEWING AT THE SAME RES JUDGING CRITICAL SHARPNESS, ESPECIALLY, ON THE WEB IS DIFFICULT AT BEST. AN IMAGE THAT APPEARS GOOD TO ONE VIEWER MAY LOOK OVER OR UNDER SHARPENED TO ANOTHER.

At iso 400 and f/11 the sunny f/16 rule's SS is 1/800 sec, right? Now you say you dialled in -3EV from the sunny f/16 rule, which would be a SS of 1/3200? But your SS was 1/1000 sec.? Now where does the flash come into this?

It should HAVE read -.3 or 1/3 EV.This ensured the white wing tips lit by direct ambient sunlight would not be overexposd. The flash pwr output was selected to provide the same f/stop at a fixed subject distance of 4 ft.

I added the . good catch ;) Others should have noticed as well.

Good use of flash. It brings out terrific details and the eye becomes visible despite the black head. Lovely image.
