Is this a Grasshopper Sparrow? shot in NJ 2 days ago. I have 3 bird books - they all look alike

No, it's actually a female House Sparrow. This is a not a native bird (comes from Europe/Asia) and is part of the Passeridae family of "Old World Sparrows". Sparrow ID can be difficult...but it can be useful to key in on certain characteristics such as the pattern on the head. The Grasshopper Sparrow has very conspicuous dark streaks on the crown/head that are abscent here. Another clue is habitat...this juniper (in an urban area?) is just not the grassland habitat where you would expect a Grasshopper Sparrow.

Agree with Judd. The "jizz" or overall look of the bird, particular around the head says House Sparrow as well. This species has declined both in NA and in many places in Europe. The reasons are unclear but underlines that common birds don't always stay common. Another example is the Passenger Pigeon!
