Very nice shot. I love the spoonie-pink water surface.
For my eyes a slight CW rotation is needed.
The correct nomenclature name is: American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos). :D

Al
I'm going to have to attend one of Artie's after Christmas IPT's as you get some really nice birds and light that I don't normally see later in the spring. It's a wonderful Pelican image.....especially the colors. Funny how we change what grabs our attention first in an image the more we shoot. Lately I've been noticing the beautiful colors and how they complement the bird. This one really gave me notice. Great job....and glad that you had a successful trip!!!

Great angle and details. I'm not sure what the reflection is, buildings? Just curious. :)

The water is the first thing to catch my eye, the fact that a Pelican is there is gravy! :)
Really nice image Al!

The subject is beautiful, but the colors in the water put this one over the top...gorgeous! It was just great seeing you and Fabs this week!

Good one, Al! I like the way the colors in the water compliment the Pelican. I also like the pano crop. I've noticed that sometimes these birds have a horn like projection on their bill and sometimes not. Does anyone know why that is? I'm assuming it's like a seasonal plumage thing, but I'm not really sure.

We only had one with the projection and was not much Jim Artie would know but is a plumage thing There was also one bird with a huge bulge on the right ear !!!

Hey Jim,

The vertical horny plate grows as the birds (both sexes, I believe) are molting into breeding plumage. One of my dreams is to photograph a breeding colony of this species before I croak.
