Crawled army style to get closer to this red beauty while it was foraging nesting material on the ground. The guy gave me a look but continued foraging . Shot with the lens foot resting on uneven ground. Subject distance about 6-7 meters. This is about 75% of the frame.

Nikon D2X
600mmVR + TC 14
ISO 250
1/250th @ F8

Manual Preset WB

I like it very much, the soft background with a hint of vegetation on the left works well for me.
I'd lighten his right eye that is a bit in the shadow and crop about an inch off the right, a bit after the round spot.
Some will object to the missing feet, but the OOF foreground is a nice alternative in my book.

Thanks for your comments Fabs.

The round spot on the right is an OOF rock.

Here is the redone version.

I used the Quick mask technique to replicate/ move the lighter right eye over the darker left. After I went through the APTATS-1 CD the Quick Mask technique is a breeze to use in a lot of situations. As suggested, also cropped off a little on the right.

Very cool, Krish. I like the repost too. The perspective is enhanced by the low angle here. Great looking birds these.

Hey Krish, good to see you here. The repost looks much better. The low level perspective has a high impact in this image. The red really stands out.
