Photographed on Long Island late in the day. This is one of the rare occasions where I had to remove the TC for an oystercatcher.

Excellent framing and great exposure control. I like the wave behind the bird, and the reflection of the brilliant red beak on the water. The lifted foot is nice.

Wonderful raised foot, perfect (square) subject to imaging sensor juxtapositon, and nice hunting pose. The base of the breaking wave distracts somewhat but if you had waited for the wave to reach the bird then you would have lost the raised foot...

When I am working around breaking waves I make sure to be in Manual mode (after determining the correct EXP via a histogram check) so that the white of a breaking wave or the dark of a wave face does not screw up the EXP...

That is a good plan. I love to work in Av when the BKGRs are fairly consistent but when the BKGRs are changing quickly as in your situation working in Manual EXP mode can save you lots of headaches.
