This sky-pointing Northern Gannet was photographed with the handheld Canon 400mm f/4 IS DO lens and the EOS-1D Mark III. ISO 400. Evaluative metering -1/3 stop of the Gulf of St. Lawrence set manually: 1/800 sec. at f/9.

The gannets on Bonaventure are so used to people that even when I moved very quickly along the rope to catch the action or a better head angle the birds just kept on keeping on--their behavior was not affected.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Did Monet do this painterly BG? Just beautiful. The range of whites is just astonishing. Gotta go to Bonaventure!

LOL - It does look almost like you have a watercolored BG propped up behind the bird! Just beautiful. Fantastic work as usual Maestro!

Only thing I can see that might need a second look is the horizon. Looks to need about a half degree CW to me.

Keith. I used the new Linear Burn trick on the whites. It rocks. Check out the thread in Eudcational Resources. Bob, the cliff is level on our left and then a bit uphill on the right.

Thanks both for your kind comments (and for your membership support!)

Wonderful colors. I especially like the eye detail and the black around the eye. As mentioned the BG is a killer.

One fantastic background Mr. Morris.
I like how the colors transition and blend into each other. The eye says it all. I like the eye color and sharpness. Nicely composed...congrats...

I particularly like the diagonal line across the frame that is formed by the head and neck. Very graceful, and the technicals, especially the exposure on the whites, are as usual impeccable. BG rocks

Delightful, graceful pose. I want to touch the whites, they are so textural.

Thanks all! :) :) :)

I am sort of surprised that nobody suggested a bit more room above.
