From today here on the coast of Maine. This one surprised me with a fly by. Not as sharp as I would like but I love these birds and the pose. 1dm3 on 500f4, iso400, AiServo - 1/1250 at f 6.3 -Manual Exp. Bob

Great shot and wonderful wing pose. I agree about the sharpness. But maybe you could add a little selective sharpening to the head.

Loons are hard to predict where they will land and then to catch in flight.....We have to go photograph these and the lighthouses together sometime Bob. E-Mail me for a time to do that.

Great capture and wing position. I only wish the bird would fly toward you. The head looks a bit soft and the wings oversharpened.

Axel, Here is one for you. From Sunday in Vermont - was on One Shot so I missed the focus but it sure was coming at me - landed 30 ft. behind the canoe! I cried when I saw the focus!! Bob

They are surprisingly hard to catch in flight. The sharpness looks quite good in my opinion.

Great to see these beauties in flight Bob and as to your post I agree with Axels comments on the sharpening. Congratulations on capturing this loon in flight. I do not believe I have ever seen one posted before. Thanks for sharing.

Ditto Axel's comment about how hard they are to catch in flight. I've been photographing loons in midcoast Maine for the past five years and have yet to get a shot even approaching the quality of yours. They're easy in the water, hard in the air. Congrats, Bob!

Judy and Keith, I will tell you my secret for Loons in flight: Handholding of the gear, lets you react faster since you do not know which way they moving. I have quite a few LIF captures but non are perfect so I will keep trying!!! Bob
