I am going on a non-photography kayaking camping trip in the northwoods where seeing moose fairly close is a possibility. In my narrow sea kayak, to be filled with camping gear - I can not bring or use a 300 F2.8 or 70-200 F4. Would like to have something along better than a point and shoot however, especially a zoom for cropping various compositions of moose seen along shore. Image quality-wise it will surely be disappointing compared to a 300, 400, or 500 prime, but the lightweight plastic 70-300 IS could be an option for such a trip if close enough to moose.
When starting out in photography, the 75-300 and 75-300 IS consumer lenses were my worse (very soft) lenses ever owned. Reviews say that the 70-300 is better but don't want to throw out money. Anyone own these and use these as a travel lens? (for rare use such as this, I don't want to spend more on the DO version) Canon
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
