There aren't many decent shots of this non-descript species, so I made a special effort for it while I was in Lauca National Park at 15,000 feet (very near where I captured yesterday's grebe photo).

I have included a range map and habitat shot, for reference. Doubtful anyone on this board has seen this bird before!

It didn't matter what noises I made; the bird would not give me a direct stare, but I'm hanging onto this frame since I think that's the only shortcoming.

Canon 600mm f/4 IS II + 1.4x III on EOS R5
1/4000 at f/5.6, ISO 400 - I unintentionally underexposed this by a full stop but pushed it around in post.

Really struggled with WB on this one, some hopefully people chime in on that front.

Looks real nice Dorian. Not much you could do to get it to stare at you looks like it was locked on something to eat. Thanks for the story and maps very interesting. TFS

Great profile shot perfectly parallel to the camera and well rescued. IQ is tops.
Did you debate about removing the pale straws behind the bird? At least a couple that are aligned with the tail.

Hi Dorian ... i would be more than happy if this is just such a seldom sighting and shot of this species .
Might be because i am not that much of a " head angle wonk " ....:w3
Nice clean shot , and very well separated .
Overall tone and color looking well processed , not understanding the WB issues here .... you have/had .
Colors can be tuned , for sure into some slight other direction . Matter of taste .
Nice fine details rendered ....
