I took several images of a pair of Stonechats some against the light and some with the light on the subject.

Hi Jon ... I really like this one .
Nice work with the framing and the backlit situation .
Personally I would use a selective " fill flash " on the subject and remove the cyans / blues ....
A pleasure to look at , with some potential for minor further edits.

I love the concept here. I would only have pointed the lens down and right a touch more for the comp, but only very slightly. Nice backlighting, especially with the cattail. I even like the faint specular highlights in the background.

Thanks Dan I will look again at composition. Andreas you have a knack for putting your finger on the factors that are not so obvious to me (sorry do you understand colloquialism?) I refer to the cyan/blue, now you said it I see what you mean and I knew something wasn't quite right.
Funnily enough I have been doing some fill flash on High ISO 4000 (for me that is!) in the back garden on Goldfinch and Blue tit.

Hi Jon .... Mr Google explained me what you mean . Sorry for my finger ..... for me too obvious that the blues/cyans are not " right " . But as for the colors .... a question of taste .
With fill flash I meant " digital fill flash " in post , way better to control IMHO .
Here is a demo ....
