Just caught this female pheasant walking across the open field, slightly bedraggled after the rain showers.

Ultimately, it’s all about just have faith and knowing your camera and Dan C has constantly proven this, it’s not all about having the best, it’s the person behind it. This is shot conventionally, ie moving the FP onto the eye rather than Eye detection, more challenging at times, but great fun. Nice that she ruffled her feathers, sadly no spray…

I like your choice of crop.
I knew before I read your text that this was a 1DX3 image. There is something so nice and clean about 1 Dx3 files.
I might clone out the little bud of grass poking out from the very lower belly feathers.

Hi Gail, I’m pleased you swung by and mentioned the files and how clean they are, you are so right. Yes, the 1DXs have gradually moved up a gear, but the MK3 is something else, noise, colour and the Cr3 files are so easy to work with, albeit some folk are struggling especially the time aspect.

Hope you are still enjoying both bodies, they are awesome, but I still think weather conditions can often play a part on which to use, but ISO 5000 it’s still a breeze for the R5.

Like the tones and textures a lot Steve. Really pops against the green bkg. Nice eye contact too.

Only suggestion is it would be great if you found a crop you liked where there was a bit more right for the subject to look into, though I do understand your op choice so as to not clip the wing with the crop.

Great Will, but if you do some new stuff, don't mess around with slow SS speeds, this female was very slow and I knew I could get away with the SS. However, just keep that SS & DoF correct, forget the ISO you have the kit, otherwise as I have said before, it will bite back with soft images or closed eyes, it's always better to have a slightly noisy image than a soft one and avoid shooting open.

I pushed the R5 a bit more again last month with Badgers 1600-6400, with no regrets. So leave the straight jacket at home next time, have fun and push both yourself and the camera, you can do it... :w3
