I sure do like your photos. Good shot of a beautiful bird. Can I ask why you chose the aperture and speed you did? It would seem that a wider aperture and thus faster shutter speed would give a little more leeway with a 600 mm lens. I'm not criticizing, I'm trying to learn. Thanks much for posting.

I've never seen one of these birds either James. Your good luck! While the eye is sharp, the rest of the bird appears a little OOF. I think Dave makes a good point about shutter speed here. You had plenty of DOF to get the bird in focus, but likely not enough shutter speed. A little more head turn would have been nice, but I understand what it's like when you get one look at a life bird; it gets the adrenaline pumping. Lastly, I would move the bird down in the frame a little. Thanks for posting!

Dave you are correct in the aperture observation For birds up close would be nice to stop down but not at the expense of shutter speed!! That camera lens combo was 900mm with the crop factor !!!

Very nice capture James Agree with Doug on bird placement and would try sharpening a little more !!! Nice view out of your window !!!!

Dave, What the others are saying about shutter speed and aperature is correct but I seem to have difficulty with DOF if I don't stop down. If I know I'm going to get a chance to take several shots I shoot at different shutter speeds. Jim

James at such close distances you don't need to worry all that much It is impossible to have enough even if you stop down to f 64 Would make sure the eye is sharp !!!
