I've noticed this behavior on more than one occasion: The Oystercatcher will prop the clam on edge in order to get better leverage to pry it open. Taken at Nickerson in 2017, in dim light of a partly cloudy sky just before sunset.
D500, 500f4 + 1.4 TC, ISO 3200, 1/2000s @ f/8 manual. SB-700 fill at -2.7EV. Exposure per the histogram was just about perfect, but the lighting conditions offered almost no detail in the black head.

Hi Bill, nice view on this Oystercatcher. I appears like a clam it is going after, nice addition. Exposure and colors look good. Nice clean beach and background. On my display the blacks on the head look a bit heavy. Thank you for sharing.

Good POV....Nice pose. Agree with Joe re the blacks on the head area, but overall I think you got good control over the blacks/whites. The small clam adds interest.

Neat little bit about the bird behavior. Wish for some more detail in those blacks on the head. But you said the light was getting dim.

I lke the image a pleasing and interesting pose, I suspect if you go back to the TIFF you could get more from the blacks using Luminosity.
