The light was a bit steep at this late morning point, but I couldn't resist taking a whack on the Wrentit tape when I saw this perch on the hillside below me. Low and behold,
this individual lit on the perch and sang back at my recording to announce this particular territory was already occupied.

Yeah, the shaded far foot isn't perch, but recall this is an in-field versus set-up shot. This is my first keeper of this shifty bush dweller.

Canon 600mm f/4 IS II + 1.4x III on EOS 5D4
1/1600 at f/5.6, ISO 800

I have never seen this bird but he looks a bit ratty-tatty? Is this correct or do they always look like this?

Yes, they look perpetually scruffy and hungover!

Dorian, a nicely lit bird I've never seen before. TFS.

Just curious, where was the focus point on this one and was it a very large crop?

They are sort of ratty Bushtits.... Light is a bit harsh.
