I spent some time up the Glen last week, first time for a while....where I managed to get close to this Red Grouse. If I had been 2 mins earlier, I would have photographs of a Golden Eagle taking a Mountain Hare. Unfortunately, the time I stopped the vehicle and got set up, the Eagle was well away in the opposite direction from where I was. Maybe next time....

Not much to offer Will other than super photo and TFS.

I will ask for my learning's sake - is it possible there is some sharpening halo or a bit of a silhouette behind the next and abode the body or is that just normal with the curvature of the bird?

Hi Brian...Thanks for that...I see it now, don't know what caused that, an easy fix, I can clone it out.

Another lovely grouse image. Great detail in comb and face. Good exposure.

Hi Will, nice close up of a Red Grouse, over here the only grouse I am familiar with is a bird called a Partridge or Ruffled Grouse. When I look at a image and in review of my images after post processing I open the image and see what my first impression/thought is. When looking at this image my impression was that if the saturation of the red combs above the eyes was lowered there might be more detail to be had there. You might give it a go but I am not familiar with the bird so maybe the color is as it should be. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for that Joe...The wattles change colour throughout the year. As this is the peak of the breeding season for these birds the wattles are really bright. I know where you are coming from, and a desaturated red will probably look better on here.

Great portrait all around. Love the detail on this one. Killer background.

A pretty nice consolation prize, I'd say. Wonderful details and colors everywhere with the simplest of BGs to show it all off. TFS

A fine shot Will, a small adjustment to the wattle with saturation and luminance, everything else looks beautiful.

Bummer on the eagle/hare missed opportunity, but this is a great consolation prize. Excellent details, I especially love the feathers on the chest area. Beautiful golden BG too.

That detail is outstanding, would never have guessed it came through the 2x! I'm a huge headshot fan, so this sits really well with me - engaging, detailed, and perfectly lit.

Agree about the eye combs. An easy fix to strengthen an already strong image.
