Great to be out again..especially when it comes to getting more "lifers" like this Pacific Emerald Dove. This location is reliable for Azure Kingfishers (different location to the one posted earlier), but after 4 hours they remained elusive. However, that's how it goes.

Cool! This species looks a lot like the Asian Emerald Doves I saw in Thailand. This is a really nice view of this bird, but the image is suffering from a lack of sharpness. I'd also hope for more eye contact, but the bill
looks good from this angle. He could use more room at left as well.

Thanks Dorian. Yes, I agree it needed it to be sharper...1/100th sec not so good here. There were a number of these on the ground and then in a tree, but those on the ground didn't stay still for long and tended to "run away" from me, despite my slow movements to get closer. Kneeling down hoping they would move towards me didn't work either. Looks like I'll revisit the location again. It was an overcast day with light fairly low, so iso had to be higher.
Here's another one at 1/200th sec, iso800.

I like this unique dove, the colors are just pretty! The first one would have been the keeper but unfortunately both of them are very soft... unless they are stuffed :D birds won't come out sharp at 1/100sec 99% of the time, you need at least 1/250 and better 1/400sec to be safe (for perched)

Great bird but agree with the above comments.
Looking forward to a "redo"!
The best way to get close is lie down, be still and wait. Be patient and they will move towards you. Might take 30 minutes but they will come back towards you!

Hi Gail. Yes...I'll be back there soon...hoping for the Azure Kingfishers...it's a noted location for them (except when I was there!). I needed a faster shutter speed that's for sure.

Gorgeous looking dove. Agree with the other comments on here.
