HI Mike !!! Doing better with the bg Less clutter but still enough to bother. Particularly the white line running through the center of the bird Should be able to soften some of it !!

Would take the bird out of the center of the frame by cropping some from the right. Best to frame it that way in camera. Focus on the head and recompose. Always want more space in front than behind. Exposure is right on and the image looks sharp. Remember the head angle.

Looks like this photo has the best sharpnss and exposure of all that you've posted, Mike :)

Yes Mike you can blur the bg !!! Do keep in mind that it has to be something that looks realistic Try giving it the look of a 2.8 wide open.

A smaller f stop would have been much better here but I do like the sharpness of the bird.
The catchlight in the eye is great too.
Really lookin' good here.

You're starting to get the hang of it Mike! Camera settings are getting better. I'd set the 40D for ISO 400; it's rare that you don't want a little faster shutter speed. With regard to the BG, feel free to blur it in PP. Shooting wide open will give less than sharp results IMO. You're best off finding perches with distant BGs and shooting stopped down. Keep up the good work!
