Hi folks other frame from Kambalnaya River in Kamtschatka .
Just a few minutes later ... with a different male .
Still used the long combo ....:w3:t3:bg3:.. i know a bit more room would be better , maybe . I am happy with the outcome ... apart from technical shortcomings due to SS and DOF . But check the given techs ....:w3

Hello Andreas,

Hectic scene, whew, lots of aggression and drama, great timing Boetie. Looking good for ISO 16.000, love the close encounter and expression from the bears.

The OOF character not a very big issue for me. Of course, a clean BG would have been awesome... but then I doubt you had time to look for a better angle.

Composition works albeit a bit tight on the LHS. Nice detail on the bears, especially on the face of the LHS character - that "wild eye" makes the image for me. Colours and tones looking great as usual :w3

Have you only a few images from this encounter? I really enjoyed viewing and would appreciate if you posted more.

I must say this looks brilliant for 16.000 Iso , it is not the 1DxII , it is the older 1Dx !!!
Composition - no other choice , LHS as shot ...but would have preferred more space on that side . Time for a better angle .....are you kidding .... this small arguments lasted mostly a few seconds , with lots of growling and and some short smacking in the face !!! And we have been kindly advised not to move to much , when being that close to the bears ....sometimes being as close as not being able to focus with the 500 , sitting with my butt right at the river. I tell you it is very exciting ... and sometimes i was not sure where to look and focus on . Sometimes up to 13 bears at a stretch of 25 meters riverfront .....meaning heaven und **** at the same time ....hope this explains a bit .

Hi Andreas, not sure if the previous one or this came first, but after reviewing either, I would have removed the TC as you can see it was to tight, plus IQ would have been a fraction better. I don't mind the crop here as it conveys the sparring aspect. Going to 1/3200 where I think you may have needed to be obviously has impact on ISO & Dynamic, but I might have traded that here. The bear in the BKG is what it is and nothing you could have done, at least it wasn't gulls as I had!

Steve - this frame is about 8 min later , i do not go and move the TC on/off in the field , just my personal WF . Actually i think the original image is not too tight , just the framing was not ideal ....too much space to the RHS . I agree the IQ would have been better with the blank 500 ...but as said before , no constant swapping of TC . The distance to the bears varied a lot , between 3 and sometimes 50 meters , depending on my and bears position , all depending on the Salmon .
Going faster with the SS , well i think 16.000 is more than borderline for the 1Dx Mark I , unless it is controlled situation , which was not at Kambalnaya River . Luckily not a single gull at Kambalnaya River .... lots at Kuril Lake :w3.

Thats fine Andreas, personally I wouldn't let it dictate the framing ultimately. I think the MK1 locks on better than the MK2, especially when the camera is set up correctly for the scene, but having shot Katmai bears with a MKIII, pushing the ISO on the MK2 for faster SS I have no problem withn the MK2, but am conservative with the 5D4.
