For starters, why not IS 400 with a correspondingly lower shutter speed?

Funny you should ask, I was just playing with higher shutter speeds last evening to see difference from say 1/1000 ss for this type of image. Turns out it didn't make much difference.

Fun family shot, and I particularly like the gentle clouds behind. Nice detail on 2 birds. Artie's ISO point make sense but isn't a dealbreaker, particular since noise isn't an issue here.....

This is by far my favorite of the rookery shots you have posted. Not cluttered at all and I like your chosen crop. I like that we can see the eyes on all 3 birds.
