Yesterday down the Jersey shore we had a pretty successful day with a good variety of birds. This image was captured after waiting quite some time for a small group of Ring-necked Ducks to get clear of some tall reads, cedar trees, and assorted undergrowth. Of course they did move across the pond to the opposite side then drifted back behind the reeds. As a last resort used a short audio and a few responded. I've photographed these ducks before, but this was the first time I've seen them stretch their necks up like a periscope reviling the dark brown ring .C&C welcome.

D500, Nikon 500mm f4/G + 1.4 TC, 1/2500s, f5.6, ISO 2000, Gitzo, Wimberley Gimbal head.

Excellent show of the namesake here Geoffrey, sure wish you had some light. The gold eye really pops, sharp and nice processing with the blacks.

What an interesting or should I say fascinating image. I have never seen the ring before and to be honest I had wondered why they were called ring necked duck! Very well processed - lovely details:cheers:

Geoffrey, the pano crop works well here and the alert pose on the duck is nice, I wish you had better light but that's they way it goes sometimes.
There are a few little hot spots on the whites maybe they can be adjusted a bit, other than that for the conditions a nice shot.

I like the crop, angled pose and nice to see the neck ring. I always thought they should be called a ring billed duck. Nice image Geoffrey.

Nice to see the ring.
Ditto on the light but it is what it is. I don't even mind the lack of good light as much as I dislike the color it imparts on the water.
I always have to deal with this on cloudy days along the North Atlantic!
