This Cooper's hawk was still waking up from a long night with temperatures below 0F. I first saw it from over 200m on a tree in an open field. I approached it slowly, 10 steps at a time pausing, waiting for it accept me. It took some time and eventually I was within 50m of the tree before it took off. I was surprised how small its circle of safety was or maybe it had to do with the cold weather.
