These guys are pretty much impossible to get close to up here, and they are not that common either. Down south, well that is another story. From the Dominican Republic, where these guys pretty much came up to you looking for a handout, and in numerous numbers too. This fella was away from his buddies, simply enjoying basking in the sun near some mangroves.

Canon 7DII + 100-400L (v1) @400mm, manual exposure, evaluativ metering, 1/800s., f/8, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, FF, eliminated a couple of faint highlights showing in the BG.

A very striking portrait of an under photographed subject Dan, especially with the dark backdrop, the red 'frontal shield' really pops nicely. The slightly lighter LHC I feel works rather than the same, continuous background.

Lovely portrait... I see many of these Gallinules but never one this close. Exposure and SH look spot on, dark background works well to highlight the bird. Thank you for sharing, Dan.

Super nice portrait here and I really like the black background. Details look perfect to me. Did you darken the background?

Hi Dan, excellent exposure throughout, and love the direct eye contact. The finer plumage detail shows up very well.

Very nice. Really like the view of the red on the head. Usaually see these guys on a side profile.

Thanks guys! The BG was rendered like this in-camera - it is dark shadow from mangroves behind the gallinule. Luckily the gallinule was spotlit beautifully!

I love the reds, which look real good against the blacks. The yellow tip adds...Very nice detail, pose and POV. Killer BG.

Still difficult to get them to stand still I imagine. Striking as expected and you did great with the REDs.
