Sometimes it pays to walk against the sun during early or late light.

Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/2500s., f/7.1, ISO 1600, natural light (warmed to taste), handheld, almost FF, a bit of dark shoreline along the bottom has been removed.

Hi Daniel,
That's a keeper! The orange water contrasts so well against the silhouetted birdbird, and the ripples just top it all off. TFS

Pretty shot Daniel. Always nice to see a super common bird presented in a different and refreshing way. Very pleasing all around. Question for you, on these silhouette shots do you prefer the bird to be all black or have a hint of detail and why?

Neat SILH. (I like mine all black like this most of the time.) Getting very low here might have improved this a bit as the bill is a bit lost in the dark concentric ripples near the head ...

with love, artie

ps: did you get some wider ones?

Love the ripples here also love silhouettes in general. Well done.

Thanks guys!!

Isaac: I prefer my silhouettes solid black only because they are more artistically pleasing to my eye. On rare occasions there may be details that help and I will keep in, but 9.5 out of 10 times I'll prefer solid black.

Hey Artie: I'm OK with the higher angle to get a better look at the ripples and reflection, but I agree about the bill 100%...I would have loved for the sandpiper to have raised it higher. Nothing wider for this opportunity though, they came a little too close and I only had a small patch of nice colour to work with, and no time to remove the TC.

Thanks Dan and Artie. I don’t shoot many shots like this but think I prefer to see just a hint of the details in the bird like an eye or some pronounced feature. But I can see the beauty in an all black shot as well.
