Interesting behavior and the top bird looks looks fairly sharp and you were pretty close to being on sun angle, but ... There are many distracting elements in the BKGR (including the o-o-f sticks, the dirt/grass line right in the middle of the HORZ frame, and the two white stripes.

What AF mode and point were you using?

the background was not far behind the three owl, so i have to handle it like it was..

AF-C (of course), AF Area Mode: dynamic area, Phase Detect AF: 153 Point,
the distance was nearly 30 meter (about 91 feet), cropped a little bit ;)

Man that's a tough one. I love the top bird, but not so much the other two. It must have been exciting to witness all of them together! I'm sure repeat visits are in order:S3:.
