Would have listed the type of Raptor but I'm not sure...so... help me out folks...

Out in Palo Alto today - didn't really get the shorebirds I went for but this guy made me feel better. Got a few of his departure. Working on the others but wanted to share this one. Happy to have got it.
Details: D850, Sigma 500/4, 1/3200, 6.3, ISO 800, Fairly large crop but lots of pixels to work with - happy with IQ in spite of that. C1P raw, PS CCC 2018 adjustments, NR and SS on output.

man this is a killer red-shouldered frame, you're evil Joel, you made me dump my gear and buy Nikon. Now I am sitting here waiting for that darned 600 to ship while I drool over this frame!

pose cannot get more dynamic than this, you nailed it. excellent light and IQ

Thanks Arash. Gotta say, in the few years I've been into photography and the couple of years into Avian photography I sure have come to enjoy myself. In the past year I think I have grown the most. Yes, I've invested more into gear - but I've spent more time in the field and since being on BPN I've grown quite a bit more due to feedback from folk like you, Gail, Isaac, William D, Bill D, Randy and Joseph just to name a few. I learn not just from your feedback but your own posts as well. It's like they say, "Read good writers to learn to write."... Anyhow, thanks to all who share tidbits of the trade and encourage one to give it another go. Yeah, I was pretty thrilled to grab this guy but most happy with learning (slowly learning) how to make my camera go "crack" the right way (as my mom once said... which... busted up our family). And, don't worry - your 6 will come.. and then... crazy good stuff from you no doubt. Cheers and thanks for the ID. (my weakest link for sure).

Congrats. This is great. Beautiful image quality and an excellent take off pose. Great background and that to die for light. And yes it's a Red-shouldered Hawk.

Very cool Jay!! Looks like you are having fun with this BIF stuff and it looks like that D850 is helping you catch some nice images too. Nice and sharp, especially for the crop. Well done and keep em coming

I would love to see how big a crop, out of curiosity. It looks **** good to me. Well done mate.
Very dynamic pose!

TFS.

OK, prepare to remove jaw from floor (mine did) ... here's a non-rotated non-cropped image (the IQ is a bit low as the file size at high quality was over the 600 limit for bpn). It's amazing what this sensor grabs with fine details. Cheers

I love seeing the original and uncropped file. Really puts into perspective just how well that camera can take a heavy crop and keep such a high level of fine feather details.

Amazing Shot. Thanks for sharing Original Image.

Interesting to know the crop-ability of D850. I have one now, was not sure of how much I could crop. This really helps me.

Thank you
