David:

Great colors on this spoonie, good eye contact.

For me personally, too tight in the frame, esp. at this large posting size. The background is somewhat distracting, I would try to soften it.

DOF is always a challenge with a long billed bird, looking straight on . There seems to be quite a bit of noise in the image, which is unexpected at this ISO unless you were really under exposed to begin with.

How much of a crop from the original is this? Always good to add some details about your post processing so we can better understand your image.

Cheers

Randy

Thanks for the critique Randy. I made no change to the exposure and the crop is about 20-25 percent. I applied no noise reduction but I did apply one round of sharpening. I will open the crop and apply noise reduction to the background..

Nice detail on the body and the colours here are quite remarkable. But I've never seen one so can't comment any further than that on colour. The detail is dropping out as the eye is reached and the bill is substantially out of focus. Normally, the aim is to keep the eye in sharp focus at least. On this one, I feel it would have been better to have also concentrated on getting as much of the bill in focus as possible too as my eye is drawn there. Agree with the comment about a bit more NR and looser crop.

the colors and composition are very nice. The BG is very distracting. the bird's head isn't as sharp as the body
