This is one of the 2 year old cubs and s/he came very close. Originally they were on the other side of the pond and even a distance out in the field. I posted some other backlit images of them further away. This is my first post at the new size restrictions.

Canon 5D3
100-400 @ 300mm
1/4000 (again to underexpose to emphasize the rimlight without blowing it out too badly but I also wanted to retain a bit of detail)
f5.6
ISO 1600
HH, very slight crop to straighten, levels, curves, sharpened in PSCC.

C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

Rachel

It works for me but I cannot appreciate it properly, my screen is wide enough but not high enough to see the whole image.

I'm really enjoying these backlit images, and this is no exception - its taken a fairly standard shot of a walking bear and turned it into something much more special. The right amount of detail in the bear itself for my taste, and the open mouth is a nice final touch

Love this, Rachel!

Agree with Mike above, no loss of detail whatsoever on the bear and such wonderful textures and colours overall!

Works for me on all counts, framing is great, nice HA, super pose from the subject. Well captured and processed my friend:w3

Warmest regards,

This is a cub? It looks huge for a cub. I really like the setting with the water and grass. Nice light as well.

Hi John - Yes, it really is a 2 year old cub. In this previous post you can see its size (or that of its twin) relative to mom's size:

I like this one a great deal Rachel and I personally think it's one of your best. The texture and detail are great including on the shadowed side of the cub. I like the setting and composition too. Although to see the full frame, I had to right click and go 'open image'. It then downscaled so it would fit on my standard full HD screen. I could not view the full width by scrolling - similar to the problem Jon had and a few others have reported for the new size. Hopefully this will get sorted but I'm getting off topic here. Either way, the larger posting size does provide a lot more impact.

Hi Rachel .... this a very nice one .
All does work very well for me , love the colors , the rim light and the overall quality .
Good to see no gulls in the image ....LOL , but this is because it is taken in the sedge area :w3.

Here on my screen the size makes this a pleasure to view !!!!!!! Better than the tiny 1200 px

I love this image Rachel....If I had to be hyper critical I would ask for a head turn a little toward you but that is not huge....Lovely stuff.

Nice one Rachel
Lovely details and tones
It does look like you could have recovered a bit too much HL from the rim-light on the back? Looks a tad muddied?

Backlighting rocks!!!
I really love this shot. The three-levelled BG also adds nicely to the overall mood of it.
