Extremely cold temperatures these past couple of weeks...pushing -40 degrees with the wind yesterday and today. I decided to layer-up and brave the weather for my first outing of 2018. The hoar frost at this location certainly provided for some beautiful winter scenery! All the birds were puffed up as well to try to keep warm. This individual was waiting for its' turn at the seed below.

Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC III, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1250s., f/5.6, ISO 1600, natural light, handheld, FF, lightened some darker spots in the BG and FG.

Does look cold! In contrast yesterday was +45 C at my place in OZ. Love the soft colors of these birds. Maybe clone out the extra white bits around the eye that look like multiple highlights?

Daniel:

Love the frost, nice comp., screams cold!

I suspect the white areas around the eye are just tiny bits of frost, so I am ok with them. Well exposed.

Cheers

This is great Daniel. I love the frost and the fluffed up Chickadee. You know I still do not have a proper image of one of them. Our weather seems balmy compared to what you have been having!

Great job Daniel. I really appreciate the exposure challenge of retaining detail on the frost while exposing for the bird. Very nice.

Thanks guys!

Randy, you are correct, those spots are indeed frosted drops.
