This is the story of a tough little great horned owlet who survived the collapse of the nest in a recent rainstorm in SoCal. One of the 3 owlets died and another was injured and captured for rehab, but he got away and survived on his own for several days before being re-united with his parents. The parents continued to feed him and he spent his days on this low tree with occasiional outings on the ground, but never far from the tree.

Nice looking owlet Loi, but for me, DoF seems a bit off, f/4 why would you shoot wide open, you have a 1DX MK2 and at ISO400?????

Great stare and I love the tilted head and the nook the bird is resting in. I agree that more DOF would be better but it is still a very nice and engaging image.

Agree with Steve re the DOF. That would have taken this image up a few notches. Very nice though, and I like the shape of the perch. Love the stare.

Steve, I regret for shooting at F4 too. Was experimenting with Auto ISO and I chose F4 earlier because of the shade in the tree. F5.6 would have been better.

Brilliant capture, Loi. Beautiful light, detail, and I too love the tilted head.

I think this one looks fantastic Loi. The sharp head and the nice inquisitive look are perfect. Nice Vivid colors also against that tree. Yes the depth of field could have been a little bit better but it doesn't take away much from the photo in my opinion. Very nice, wish I had a horned owl with shot as nice as this.

Loi,
Great shot wish there was a bit more DOF in this shot.

Great eye contact, perch and background, it is sharp where it needs to be! We have a bumper crop of Great Horned Owlets now here in minnesota, but I cannot seem to get any on an awesome perch. perhaps I need to learn to speak owl haha
