I really like your composition here John, the GBH looks sharp and well exposed. Well done. I would be tempted to tone down the snow a bit, maybe just a slight adjustment with the highlight slider in LR. :-)
Also if I'm being completely honest, the light reflection just in front of the GBH is distracting for me... I always try to be very aware of distracting reflections and move to my right or left to eliminate them when possible.

Nice to see a heron in a winter setting. I agree, your composition is well balanced. I think the snow is a s dark as can be before looking too dull. If you could have, getting the lens down to ground level would have been ideal to throw the BG much farther and blurred, minimizing its impact. I do realize it's not always possible, but something to think about should a similar situation present itself.
