This image was taken at my local lake in Miami Lakes Florida with the Nikon D500 (crop sensor) and AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm 1-5.6E ED VR

Great pose on this very commonly photographed bird. I always feel that with birds like Herons and Cormorants and ... you have to get something a little out of the norm for it to work and you got it here. FYI - I have the same camera and lens and my experience is that the IQ improves at f6.3 over f5.6 when shooting @ 500mm.

Classic cormorant pose. I like the detail you have on the feathers and the submerged perch looks cool. I would try some more contrast.
