The bison is an iconic species of Yellowstone. They are everywhere. They use the roads to travel around the park, so getting close up portraits of a bison can be done safely from inside a car. Knowing this, I planned for a close up portrait against a completely white background. So when I saw a herd of bison coming towards me after a recent snow storm, I looked for possible spots that were blanketed with snow and waited inside my car. When the bison slowly walked past me, all I had to do was to point my lens out of the car window and take the shot.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III
Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS II @ 175mm
1/500, f8, ISO 800, manual exposure
Hand held from car window

Almost full frame, cropped a little top, right, and bottom.

sharpened around the eye only.

Hope you like it.
Thank you

Hi Loi, as a portrait, this for me is really stunning, great PP here, love the depth in the fur, detail and the juxtapose of subject against the white backdrop. It has an almost 3D quality which is rarely scene in images, to me this is one of, if not the best image I have seen from you and of a Bison, superb work.

This for me is an animal I would relish to photograph in the snow, with ice backed fur and steam coming from it's breath, you could do a great series on this with head shots, especially head on.

A great image IMHO to round off the year!

Hi Loi - Well worth the wait for it to get so close. I agree, one of your best. There's a richness to the tones and colors that really set this apart. Love the glossy eye too. Dof is great. Very well executed and processed.

Happy New Year and TFS,
Rachel
