Orange-crowned Warbler

Was out birding and just brought my 100-400 ii along in case I found anything good. Happened upon this Orange-crowned Warbler this morning that allowed me a 4 shot burst before it sunk back into the dense tangle. From today. Great Kills Park, Staten Island, New York.

Canon 7dii with Canon 100-400 ii and 1.4x iii. Hand held. 560mm, F8, ISO 500, SS 1/1600.

Converted in DPP 4. In PS I sharpened, cropped and applied NR to background. Lowered contrast of background just a bit.

I like the different shades of green. Oh how I would love to shoot at f,8 with a high SS. I love the BG, was it a big crop, I feel the IQ on the bird, is just not there. Lovely pose and nice HA.

Cropped about 40%. Agree the IQ could be a little better. Perhaps due to motion blur or using the converter on the 100-400 ii.

Ah man, you are making me yearn for the return of warblers, and we just had our first significant snow fall of the season! I like the textbook pose, and very beautiful background. I find the IQ acceptable, but I do see what appears to be softness around the contour of the bird, especially around the head and upper back. Still a fine image of a species I have yet to photograph....

Funny I agree with you as well. It is sharp enough but not as good as what I get with the 500 and 1.4 on a tripod. I saw the softness you are referring to. It is on the RAW as well. Present in all 4 shots I got of this bird. Almost like I needed more DOF but I was at F8. There have been crazy strong W and NW winds in NYC for the last few days. 20-30 MPH with gusts of much more. Maybe that part was blurred by a bit of wind pushing against the bird. That is where the wind was coming from. My back was to the east so the far part of the bird was facing west. That is my best guess. This guy is hanging with a flock of Yellow-rumps which are the only warblers we have left around here in any numbers. Of course there are a few Palms and Pines still floating about but they are 99% gone by now.
