This is one of my favorites made on a trip to Katmai Alaska this week. I was glad to lead an IPT group for Arthur Morris while he was in the UK. Thanks for the privilege Artie!
This image was made about 10:30 PM or so handheld from a boat right offshore of a small grassy island with 15-20 mph west winds at our backs (we were protected from most of the wind). Eagle photography opportunities just doesnt get any better than this!

In this type of situation photography with a tripod is very difficult and not really worth the effort. Participants with hand holdable lenses such as the100-400 or 400 F5.6 were making great images!
Many of Katmai's bays and harbors are filled with small islands, sometimes you can see 3 or 4 pairs (breeding pairs) of Bald Eagles nesting or just perching on these islands in one small area. There are so many situations like this its really amazing.
I am leading 3 workshop groups To Katmai this year, 2009 and 2010. The next trip in July is full but there are available spots in later trips. Please contact me for more information if you would like to join me.

We also photographed Brown bears, otters, puffins, Black Oystercatchers, seals, sea lions on the trip.

Amazing image... Got to love the light, pose and composition. Too bad it's necessary to add the signature across the bottom... but I understand.

Hi Gus!

Thanks for the comments.
He wasnt landing thought just hovering in the wind when I took the image, we were near his island so he was trying to stand his ground and intimidate us! We didnt go too close, this was made with a 600, or land on the island to avoid stressing them too much or driving the 2 off.

I forgot about the Sig, I usually dont add a Sig on my BPN images, but I had it prepared already so I used the image as is. You should see how good it looks at 1500-2000 pixels without a Sig of course.

Hi Robert and welcome back!

Thanks Brian!

Yes, tripods just dont work well from a moving boat, I had the whole group handholding. Some were converted after they had a chance to see the handheld images vs. tripod mounted :)

2009-2010 dates are set I will PM you.
