Good detail and color Chris but I suspect f5.6 might have been a better choice.

I quite like the shallow DoF for a shot like this, but it may well divide opinion. What I would have preferred was an all blue BG, possibly obtained by you moving a little to your left at the time of shooting. Lovely details and colours.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for your comments, and both of you have hit on the challenges I had with this shot. First the Pelican was lying/resting at the end of a not so wide pier and he had a piling behind his body. So without getting wet, I did move as far to the left as I could and shot at 2.8 to blur as much of the bi-color background as possible and to draw the attention to his eye. I've been looking for this same shot with a better background ever since and have yet to come upon it. Time will take care of this.
