Little Egret (Egretta garzetta)
Nikon D4 f/7.1, 1/6400s, ISO 800, 700mm | spot metering, manual exposure, centre point focus, natural lighting | burst mode 10 fps | skimmer

The action happened very quickly and although not possible to see the small fish in real time, 1/6400 s captures its last moments of daylight

Great picture matt.
Like th3e water flow across the shot and the fish is a bonus. And that eye !!

This is quite an impressive image! Love the high water and the feel of it. Killer low angle, light and action. The only thing I might consider to improve an already terrific image is move the bird slightly to the left of the frame b/c I Feel it may be a bit too centered.

Great exposure on the bird, and the timing is spot on. Personally I'd lose just a little off the bottom and replace it with some on top if you have it,

I love your low angle shooting. The whole surrounding blue water gives a great effect and the white birds stands out nicely. Super sharp and the chosen DOF puts a focus on the action. I'd also move the bird to the left and take a little off the bottom....combination of the above comments. Very well done, Matthew.

The 'feel' of the water really makes this already impressive image. You captured the moment perfectly, with lovely detail throughout. Well done.

What gorgeous tonalities, on top of a fantastic catch (for you both). I cold go with a little off the bottom.

Fantastic!! Another vote for a bit off the bottom, but boy that silky smooth flowing water line really adds to the appeal of the image.

This is excellent Matthew.
Love the blues in the water and the silky feel of the water.
Another vote for some off the bottom to just above your signature.

wow, I just clicked on this because the title had me curious! I am glad I did! Great action capture of the tiny minnow about to get snapped! Great timing. Love the low angle blur, and sharp well exposed subject.

Thanks to all for viewing and commenting. I agree that a 2:3 (4:6) crop version works better than 5:7 and appreciate the feedback (4:6 available for viewing by clicking the image)

Just looking at this again, after thanking you for winning for June :S3: And, its probably one of the best images I have seen on here recently, IMO. Its pretty absorbing.
