Dragonfly season has started in earnest here with the emergence of these pennants. Starting to see a few summer species. Taken today at my neighborhood lake.

Awesome details, composition, colors and bkgd! Those red veins really stand out! Do you photograph early in the AM before it gets warm?

Hi Nancy and thanks! I photograph odes both in the early AM and the mid-day. I prefer early morning for nice light but some species are hard to find early as they get more active as the temps warm in the day. This was taken close to mid-day. I walked the lake in early morning to photograph birds and had to come back later for this guy (I spotted him as I was leaving and only had my supertelephoto with me).

Wonderful sharpness, great BG and good DOF. Hard to get enough on the wings for these guys at the magnification needed. Good job here!

Beautiful dragonfly, Allen. I like the colors, complimenting background and the angle you were able to capture it from. Thank you for sharing.

Nice one Allen. I don't normally go for plain BGs with insects but this looks good. I do like the angle too and the use of the frame.

Very nice indeed Allen, details pose and DOF good, I am not complaining at all about detail but I suspect you would benefit from a faster shutter speed when using 420mm.

These are one of my favorite dragonflies - because of the colors, patterns, and their cooperative nature. Very nice image on all counts - pose, sharpness, DOF, comp, light, and background!
