From last October when we had this uncommon bird visit us for a week or so. I got to photograph it for a very successful session, albeit a wet one as I lay flat in about three inches of water. A bit disconcerting after it began catching leech after leech I must say! Here it had a small freshwater mussel for desert...

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/2000s., f/5.6, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, cropped for comp, a couple of imperfections on the water removed.

Beautiful photograph. The low angle, sharpness, colors, food in beak, background all make is just about perfect. In a perfect world, I guess the bird being a bit more perpendicular would be ideal but that does not bother me at all. I think this is one of the best shots I have seen of this species.

Great shot Daniel. Composition, color sharpness and background are all superb. The catch adds further interest. And what an effort to get that fine POV!

Great low angle. I love the mussel and the fact that you were able to get it in sharp focus along with the head.

A very pleasing image that engages the viewer well. One could wish for a little more eye contact but that`s not essential. The mollusk prey adds a nice touch. Leaches are no fun when doing a worm burner - well done for hanging in there!

Very nice Dan- Good DOF considering the head on view. Mussel a bonus too.
Good stuff

I love these kind of shots. The calm water makes it even better. Great that there is the food item and the cath light in the eye.
