The Karoo desert is one of the places with the least light pollution on earth.
This obviously makes nocturnal photography a treat here!

Techs:
Nikon D800
Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8 @ 16mm
f2.8 | 30 seconds | ISO-1600

Well done, Morkel, as always. I have no suggestions, other than to suggest that others look and enjoy. ;-)

Very nice night exposure! I wonder about rotating the camera to make the tree vertical, which would put the Milky Way at a more expected diagonal angle. IQ in the corners looks wonderful!

Hi Morkel, this a really nice frame, I appreciate that you did not over illuminate the foreground, the stars look sharp, like the natural color of the galaxy. TFS

This is a bit unusual with the core being horizontal in the frame but I think it could still work. The light painting on the tree is nicely done. Thanks for sharing, Morkel!

I too like the fact that the tree is not overly bright and the stars are still "stars" in the image..

Nice effective milky way night photo, Morkel. It seems a bit noisy for iso1600, my only nitpick.

Nicely executed Morkel and just the right amount of light painting on the foreground. I am going to be borrowing the 14-24mm lens for a trip up along the Georgian Bay shoreline and am looking forward to trying it on some night-scapes :)

Morkel,

Excellent, well balanced image. Beautiful! Couldn't stop looking at it.

Marie and I will spend four nights with friends in the Karoo between our two Wild-eye safaris. Your image convinced me I definitely need to bring a tripod and the 12x24. I really didn't need a tripod at Mana Pools last time, but I had been debating with myself whether a tripod would be worth the extra bulk for the Migration safari.
