Resting Fly !!!

While doing birds Sunday found some Dflies For some reason there were very few over the water, must seem to be on the ground? by the road !!!

Wonderful shot - the eyes and head are so sharp!
The male dragonflies are very territorial and hover over water. Any female coming by is likely to be grabbed behind the head by a male with claspers on the rear of the abdomen and mated with. The females, who are not so territorial, often are found a bit away from the water, which is clearly an area where they will not be harrassed as much. Maybe this is what you are noticing. I'm no expert but I'm reading a book about dragonflies (A Dazzle of Dragonflies) right now.
