Snowy Owls in snowfall (or any owl for that matter) always make for appealing imagery. This one was no exception, with snow falling as we arrived near a favorite perch. Not a lot of darks in the background to make those snowflakes visible, so I lined myself up best I could with whatever distant grouping of trees I could use, and pished to get a better head angle. I really like that one claw showing :c3:.

Canon 7DII + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/320s., f/5.6, ISO 1600, FF, enhanced the eyes that looked dull in low light, shortened the twig that nearly touched the tail.

Very nice indeed a compositionally pleasing image, everything is just right for me.

Love the setting, superbly exposed and eye contact. TFS.

Daniel:

Excellent strategy about trying to get some darker areas in the background to make the snow pop. Beautifully exposed, great eye contact.

Even like the perch here, because of the angle and its texture. The vegetation softens the usual harsh linearity of the wire fence.

Very well done.

Cheers

I am forever envious of your Snowy Owl photographs. They are birds that I have never been privileged to see, and your strategy here has produced another gem.

Daniel, the strategy works well. Love the snow against the distant dar BG. Even the perch looks OK because the wires are much below the bird. Great composition. Loi

Hi Daniel,
Wonderful frame here. Love the snow with the owl - quite striking. I'll have to try pushing the ISO on my 7D2 more than I have been if the need arises - especially on lighter subjects.

Beautiful winter scene Dan. I particularly like the fact the BG has the graduated look, shows off the snowflakes well, but also retains the white winter look. It's a nice combination.

Hi Daniel,
