John, This made me laugh. Ditto David's comment. Very indignant indeed. I love the iridescence on his body. I thought he looked a bit crunchy too, (especially around the head). I thought it may have been sand?

Glennie-I have three pools or puddles( they are quite small) goiung at the moment. They are usually in hollows where water gathers anyway. Once the birds get used to them they continue to use them even after or in rain.
The one i use the most is spring fed and has been in place with a hide for nearly 40 years.

Thank you John. You are lucky to have a spring fed pond, with a hide! I have a permanent creek bordering my property so the birds are spoilt for choice. I have also planted out my paddocks with hundreds of trees, shrubs and grasses...which is nice for the birds, but not much good for photography. I can see a little bit of pruning maybe wise.
