This handsome gull posed nicely on a fishing pier in the Lima harbor, on a dull, foggy morning in June. Formerly known as Band-tailed Gull because of it's diagnostic tail marking, it resides along the strip of South American coast washed by the nutrient-rich Humboldt Current. This is a non-breeding adult, showing a grey head; in breeding plumage the head is white. One of a number of lifers we had that morning.

A gull I know nothing about. Lovely colors of the bird, nice detail and background. Thank you for sharing, Bill.

I always love it when I see a new species posted on BPN. I had never heard of this gull until now.
Excellent IQ.
TFS- I learned something today,
Gail

Great looking bird and I love the beak. Good exposure and IQ but the head feathers back top left of the eye look a little soft to me. Thanks for showing a bird that I will probably never see for real.

What a cool looking gull Bill! Your shot is A-1. If anything, consider to bring out the highlights in the eye more. Thanks for posting this!

As far as gull portraits go this is about as perfect as it can get. I'm really enjoying this image.
