I just came back from a trip to the Brazil Pantanal. Although the main goal was looking for Jaguar, I had more successes with the birds more than the mammals.

Here is an early favorite.

5D3
500f4 II + 1.4X III
1/6400
f5.6
ISO-800
Aperture Priority -1 EV exposure compensation
HH from boat
Cropped a little from left, right, and top, about 66% of FF.

Thank you for your comment.

Hi Loi, a Heron I havent seen before, and I do like the preening pose - we have a great view of the eye, and its open, as most birds close their eyes whilst preening. The vertical comp works well, and the heron is separated nicely from the BG. Overall, I feel the image is a touch too dark. I took it into PS, and with a little brightness, it does lift the Heron much more. :w3

Great bird and pose.
I find the image quite contrasty and wish for more room at the bottom.
I would rework the PP on this one because it could be a smashing image with a bit more TLC!

I love the bird and the pose, the image is dark and the BG is muddled. I would start again with the PP...

You are absolutely right. I did wonder whether the image was a bit dark, but then thought may be that would show the heron better. I also added contrast.

So started again with DPP, added 1/3 EV so that the white is about 230 or so and then I adjusted the white setting to 250. Added some Hue/saturation, and then sharpen. Hope you like it better.

Many thanks
