I share this one as it was one of the funniest things I,ve seen. No photographic masterpiece, and makes a break form Snipes !!
This young heron had been preening in front of me for about an hour. Most of the time it spent stabbing at dragonflies in the thisles around him. This Sympetrum kept landing on his head aand of course evry time the heron made a futile stab at it it would take off and then land again.. The bird got quite fed up in the end and cleared off!! Funny to watch. The smaller damsel fly sems to be amused by the affair too! Some of the stuff in the beak is thistledown

Nice light and good detail John, but obviously it's the dragonfly and damselfly which makes this image special :S3:

Thanks Nick
To see the birdsnapping at something it couldnt see was something else ! Clever dragonfly what ever. I reckon its the less serious side of nature photography which tends to get forgotton unfortunately.

Good story and excellent portrait, John. The Dragonfly on the head is great.

Thanks all.
I did try some video with the D7100 but not done it before and had trouble with the focus. Would have been nice.

Hee hee! Definitely gave me a huge smile. Love the story behind it too. (I think the image would work quite well minus the damselfly too!) Thanks!

Thanks all. You can see the head is getting a little crunchy with the big crop. Isuppose the damsel could go- easy enough in that position.
Cheers
