I managed to capture this one yesterday at a local loch, whilst using my portable hide for cover.

I would say your hide was effective. Good eye, drops, pov.

Because the reflection is weak, I could see cropping up from the bottom, which would also reduce some of the bright spots in the foreground. I might also try to tone down some of the brighter areas in the background.
I also might tone down the whites on the rump a bit, to see if you can tease out some more detail there.

Do you sit on the shore in your hide, float about, or some other technique?

With the sun hitting the bird's rear end it is going to be hard to eliminate blowout. I'd tone down the bright bits on the bird and water. The composition is just fine for me. This image might be improved with vignetting IMHO.

THis looks very similar to our Australian Grebes.

Great image of the subject. Sharp, good HA, nice light. The issues I see in this image is the foreground and background with all the bright highlights in the water. Too many to clone out but maybe a tighter crop would eliminate a lot of it.
