Photographed the other day at local wildlife preserve as he was perched on a stalk of Queen Anne's Lace. C&C welcome.

D4s, Nikon 500mm + 1.4 tc, 1/400s, f 8.0, ISO 800, Gitzo tripod, Wimberley Gimbal head.

Soft lighting , interesting, delicate perch.

The head and breast are fairly soft, and based on the fact that the feet, tail and stalks in front of and behind the bird are relatively sharp, I suspect some motion blur as the culprit, not the focus.

The stalks right behind the head are also a bit distracting.

I hate posting my critique after Randy because he and I often think alike.
I agree 90% with his critique. ( I don't mind the grasses intersecting with the head!)
I really like the pose and the beautiful grasses and flowers you included.
Do you have Nik Efex plug-in? You could try some detail extractor on the head and breast.

I agree with the bird being slightly soft owing to shutter speed. The general environment is nice but the stalks appearing over the bird's head is an issue IMHO. I'm sorry if this view is in the most part negative.

Thanks for pointing the sharpness/detail issue out. It's possibly motion blur Randy and I did suspect that initially. It should be automatic by now, but I did not sharpen the jpeg nor did I attempt detail extractor in Nik Efex Gail. Here is a repost with a bit of selective sharpening and detail extractor.
