cicada, before and after

Here is the cicada newly broken out from its exoskeleton. I positioned the exoskeleton in front of the cicada, for comparison. I was laying on the ground for this "bug's-eye" view.

Great idea, I suspect you went for 5.6 to occlude the background. I would suggest more DOF would have made this good image a great one. If the opportunity were to represent itself I would try again - also try not to bisect the exoskeleton.

Thanks Jonathan for putting into words what made it difficult to process this image; not enough DOF and that bit of the exoskeleton cut off. I kept the exoskeleton, now I need the live model for a retake! And yes, f5.6 was to keep the bkgd diffuse.

Ah, those cicadas may be abundant and loud but I have not been successful in finding them once they are up and turned on!
